The Mini travels, and that changes everything. A dish bolted to a roof needs almost nothing. A dish that lives in an RV bay, a backpack or a truck box needs protection, a different power source, and a fast way to set up. Here are the four accessories that actually matter, plus the power trap that catches most first-time buyers.
A hard case and a proper power cable
Those are the only two genuinely necessary purchases. The case protects the investment in transit, and the cable decides whether you can run it anywhere other than a wall outlet.
1. The carrying case
The most-purchased Mini accessory, for good reason: the dish moves around, and once it’s scratched or cracked it doesn’t get repaired.
Two families exist on Amazon.ca:
- Rigid IP67 case with cut foam. The most protective. Compartments for dish, cable and power brick, shoulder strap included. The default choice if the dish travels by vehicle.
- Ultralight EVA soft case. Much lighter, fine for occasional transport or backpacking. Less reassuring if the case rolls around a truck bed.
Look for a cutout that holds the cable coiled without a tight bend. The cable usually fails before the dish does.
IP67 hard case with cut foam and shoulder strap
The best rating in the category on the largest review base. Cut foam for dish, cable and brick, IP67 rated. This is the one if the Mini travels by vehicle.
2. The power cable, and the trap
The Mini takes power through a DC barrel jack, not only through the wall brick. That opens two very useful options on the road: vehicle 12 V, and USB-C.
Powering the Mini over USB-C requires a cable with a built-in PD trigger chip that negotiates the right voltage from the charger. A plain USB-C to barrel adapter will not work, or will work intermittently. This is also the category with the most uneven reviews on Amazon: read recent comments before buying, and choose 18 AWG rather than thinner.

Let us be honest: this whole category is weak. Ratings run from 2.8 to 4.4 stars and reviews mention intermittent dropouts. This one strikes the best balance of rating and review volume, with 18 AWG rather than 16. Read recent comments before ordering, they change fast.
3. The mount
The Mini’s built-in kickstand is fine on a picnic table. Anywhere else, three options:
- Suction mount for windshield or dashboard. Popular with people who want a connection at rest stops. Reviews are middling: suction cups let go in extreme heat and extreme cold, both of which Canada delivers. Use at stops, never while driving.
- Tripod adapter. The most versatile. Paired with an ordinary camera tripod, it lets you adjust height and work around obstructions.
- Clamp or railing mount. Handy on a balcony, a boat rail or an RV ladder.

4. Something to run it away from an outlet
This is what makes the Mini genuinely self-sufficient. Its modest draw allows much lighter solutions than the Standard dish: a decent power bank or a small power station covers a normal day of use.

What actually matters when camping
Free advice: the Mini runs warm. In full summer sun on a dark surface it can throttle or shut down thermally. Give it airflow underneath and avoid black asphalt at midday.

Frequently asked questions
Can you use the Mini while driving?
It will technically connect in motion, but that requires the right plan and a secure mount. A suction cup on a dashboard is not one.
Do I need a case if the dish stays at the cottage?
Not really. The case is for transport. If the Mini lives in one place, put the money into a good mount instead.
Can the Mini run off a car battery?
Yes, on 12 V with the right cable. Just watch that you don’t drain the starting battery. For long stops, use an auxiliary battery.
Are Standard dish accessories compatible?
No. The Mini has its own shape, its own mounting points and its own power connector. Make sure the listing explicitly says “Mini”.
