Off-grid living is having a renaissance in Canada: tiny homes, hunting cabins, remote bush camps, solar-powered cottages. Starlink Mini + 200W solar + 100Ah battery = self-sufficient internet anywhere in the wilderness. Here are the real setups Canadians use.

The minimum off-grid setup
Solar + battery system that runs Starlink Mini 24/7:
| Component | Spec | Cost CAD |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panel | 200W monocrystalline (Renogy, Eco-Worthy, Newpowa) | $250-350 |
| Charge controller | MPPT 30A (Victron, Renogy Rover) | $120-180 |
| Battery | 100Ah LiFePO4 (Battle Born, Ampere Time, EcoFlow) | $500-900 |
| 12V-to-USB-C PD 65W converter | For Mini direct power | $25-40 |
| Mounting hardware | Tilt brackets, MC4 cables, fuses | $80-120 |
| Total | $975-1,590 |
Plus the Starlink Mini ($299) and Roam 50GB plan ($75/month) = ~$1,300-1,900 total upfront, $75/month ongoing.
How long does the battery last without sun?
Starlink Mini at 30W average × 24h = 720 Wh/day. 100Ah LiFePO4 (1,280 Wh usable to 50% discharge) covers 1.5 days. With 200W panels in winter sun (4h equivalent), you generate 800 Wh/day — slightly net positive.
For 3-4 days of cloudy weather autonomy, upgrade to 200Ah battery and 400W panels. Costs scale linearly.
Winter considerations
- LiFePO4 batteries can charge below 0°C but should be kept above -10°C. Insulate the battery box or bring it indoors.
- Snow on solar panels reduces output to zero. Brush them clean weekly.
- Tilt your panels 60-70° in winter for maximum sun exposure at high latitudes.
- Starlink dish heater draws extra 50-100W during snow events. Plan for it.
Generator backup (optional)
For 5+ days of cloudy weather (rare but happens in Pacific Northwest, Atlantic Canada), a 2 kW gas-powered inverter generator (Honda EU2200i, $1,200 CAD) covers extended outages. Run 2-3 hours to recharge the battery bank.
Sample setups by use case
Hunting cabin in NWT bush (1 user, 4 weeks/year): Roam 50GB ($75/mo) active during hunt, Standby rest of year. 100W solar + 50Ah battery covers it. Total upfront: ~$800.
Tiny home in BC interior (2 full-time residents): Residential 100 ($75/mo). 400W solar + 200Ah battery system. Standard dish (more headroom). Total upfront: ~$2,500.
Off-grid mountain lodge in Yukon (3 staff, 8 guests/season): Roam Unlimited ($200/mo) summer, Standby winter. Performance dish ($3,200) for 200+ guest devices. 1.5 kW solar + 600Ah battery. Total upfront: ~$8,000.
Common off-grid mistakes
- Buying lead-acid batteries: lead-acid is heavier, more dangerous, requires ventilation, and lasts 3-5 years vs 10+ for LiFePO4. The price difference no longer justifies lead-acid.
- Undersizing the system: a Starlink dish + LED lights + phone charging is only ~50W. People underestimate the actual load (laptops, small fridges, water pumps).
- Not insulating the battery: cold batteries deliver less capacity. -20°C reduces capacity by 30-50%.
- Skipping the MPPT charge controller: cheap PWM controllers waste 20-30% of solar output.
Off-grid FAQ
Can I run Starlink on EcoFlow Delta or Bluetti power station?
Yes. EcoFlow Delta 2 (1,024 Wh) runs Starlink Mini for ~24 hours. Use the 120V outlet via Mini’s official adapter, or the 12V/USB-C outlet for direct DC.
Will Starlink work in -45°C if my battery freezes?
The dish itself is fine. But your battery and charge controller need a heated enclosure or insulated box. Don’t try to charge a frozen LiFePO4 battery.
Can I add a wind turbine?
Yes for high-wind sites (coastal, prairie open). 400W vertical-axis turbines complement solar nicely in winter when sun is short but wind is strong.
