Used Starlink dishes turn up constantly on Marketplace and Kijiji, typically $200 to $350. Tempting when new is $599. But there are two traps that turn a bargain into a total loss — and one thirty-second question that avoids both. Here’s how to buy or sell without getting burned.
1. A dish still tied to an account. If the seller hasn’t removed it from their Starlink account, you will never be able to activate it on yours. You’ve bought a metal plate.
2. A rented dish. If it still belongs to Starlink, the seller has no right to sell it, and it will have to be returned.
What to ask before you pay
- “Have you removed the dish from your Starlink account?” — They need to have done this in the app. Ask for a screenshot showing the equipment is no longer listed.
- “Did you buy it or rent it?” — If rented, walk away.
- “Do you have the receipt?” — Useful for any remaining warranty and for confirming it isn’t stolen.
- “Which generation?” — Older round Gen 1 dishes perform worse and can be harder to activate. A recent rectangular dish is worth substantially more.
The real test: try it at the seller’s place, or at minimum activate it on your account before handing over the money. A dish that refuses to register tells you within five minutes.

Before paying $300 for a used dish, check your address on the official site. Across much of rural Canada the dish is offered at no upfront cost to new customers, with a free month of service through a referral link. If you’re selling
- Remove the equipment from your account in the Starlink app. This is the essential step — skip it and the buyer can do nothing, and you have a dispute.
- Factory-reset the router to wipe your Wi-Fi network and passwords.
- State the generation in your listing, with photos of the serial number and the actual condition.
- Sell the complete kit — dish, router, cable, mount. An incomplete kit loses a lot of value, and replacement cables aren’t cheap.
- Be honest about wear. A dish that’s spent three winters outside shows it, and should be described that way.
