Starlink in the BC Mountains: Will Terrain Block Your Signal?

In most of Canada, the question is whether Starlink reaches you. In mountainous BC, it’s whether you can see enough sky. A valley bottom in the Kootenays, a property tucked under a north-facing slope, a cabin in a canyon — terrain is the one thing that genuinely limits satellite internet, and BC has more of it than anywhere else. Here’s how to know before you buy.

Starlink dishes in Canada point toward the northern sky. That means a mountain or ridge on your north side is the problem — a peak to your south usually isn’t. Two neighbours in the same valley can have completely different results depending on which way the slope faces.

Why direction matters more than height

The dish needs an unobstructed cone of sky, roughly 100 degrees wide, tilted north. Satellites pass through that window continuously. Anything solid inside it — rock, ridge, tree line — interrupts the connection each time a satellite crosses behind it.

The practical consequences in mountain country:

  • South-facing slopes generally do well. Your view opens toward the north sky.
  • Steep north-facing slopes are the hard case. The mountain sits exactly where you need to look.
  • Narrow, deep valleys running east-west are more constrained than wide ones.
  • Elevation on your property helps — moving the dish 10 metres up a slope can clear a ridge entirely.

How to check before you spend a dollar

Do this in order. It takes fifteen minutes and saves a return shipment:

  1. Use the obstruction tool in the Starlink app. You don’t need to own a dish — download the app and use the camera-based sky scan from where you’d mount it. It maps your actual visible sky.
  2. Scan from several spots: roof peak, the high corner of the property, a clearing. Results vary dramatically over short distances in terrain.
  3. Stand where the dish would go, face north, and look up. If you see mostly ridge, that’s your answer without any software.

  • Relocate the dish. Ten metres can change everything. Try multiple scan positions before mounting.
  • Raise it. A pole mount or roof peak clears tree lines and low ridges. This solves most marginal cases.
  • Run a longer cable. Putting the dish at the high point of the property and running cable to the house is common in mountain installs.
  • Accept intermittent service. Brief dropouts are tolerable for browsing and streaming with buffering; they’re disruptive for video calls.

Heavy snowfall is common at elevation in BC, and the dish’s built-in heater melts accumulation automatically. Two site-specific cautions:

  • Mount clear of roof avalanche paths. Sliding snow off a steep metal roof will destroy a dish.
  • Secure against wind. Ridge-top and exposed installs need proper mounting hardware, not a ground stand.

Sustained heavy rain can briefly reduce speeds, but the effect is far smaller than on legacy satellite systems.
