📰 News — August 2026
Canada has its own Starlink rival, and it just shifted into high gear. Telesat, the Ottawa-based satellite operator, is investing over $7 billion to build Lightspeed, its low-Earth-orbit constellation — powered by a $2.7 billion contract with the federal government, the largest in the company’s history. Here’s what it means, and what it changes (or doesn’t) for getting rural internet today.
⚠️ Bottom line up front: Lightspeed is not an option for your home in 2026. Commercial service is targeted for early 2028, and it’s aimed first at defence and enterprise. To connect a cottage or home right now, Starlink remains the only nationwide option.
What was announced
- Over $7 billion invested to build and launch Telesat Lightspeed, a global LEO broadband network.
- A $2.7 billion contract with Ottawa — the largest in Telesat’s history — focused on defence and national security.
- The constellation grows 44%, from 156 to 225 satellites.
- Commercial service targeted for early 2028.
- Canadian-built: the satellites are manufactured by MDA Space, a Canadian space company.
- Over $5 billion in customer commitments already, per management.
The ironic twist: SpaceX is launching the rival’s satellites
Here’s the paradox of the space industry: Telesat has committed roughly US$1 billion to SpaceX to launch its Lightspeed satellites on Falcon 9 rockets, starting in 2026. In other words, Elon Musk’s company is putting its own competitor into orbit. Telesat is, according to its CEO, SpaceX’s largest customer after the US government.
Telesat Lightspeed vs Starlink: where things stand

| For your home in 2026 | ✅ Yes | ❌ Not before 2028 |
Great news for Canada — worth watching, but no reason to wait
A credible Canadian rival is good for competition and sovereignty. But Lightspeed targets 2028 and defence first. If you need internet at the cottage or home today, Starlink is the only option available nationwide, contract-free, with 1 month free through our link.
