Starlink Bypass Mode: Use Your Own Router in Canada

Starlink’s built-in router is fine for most homes. But power users — VLAN networking, mesh systems with custom controllers, advanced firewalls, port forwarding, static routes — need their own router. Here’s how to enable Bypass Mode and connect any third-party router.

What Bypass Mode does

Bypass Mode disables the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi and DHCP. The Starlink dish then becomes essentially a modem: it delivers raw internet to your Ethernet port. You connect your own router to handle Wi-Fi, DHCP, firewall, and routing.

Hardware you’ll need

  • Starlink Ethernet Adapter ($35 CAD) — required for Gen 3 dishes, which use a proprietary connector. Buy from starlink.com or Best Buy.
  • Your own router: UniFi Dream Machine, ASUS RT-AX88U, Eero Pro 6E, Synology RT6600AX, Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, or any modern router with a WAN port
  • Cat6 or Cat6a Ethernet cable: from Starlink dish to your router’s WAN port

Step-by-step setup

  1. Power on the Starlink dish: standard setup, let it auto-orient
  2. Connect via the app: connect your phone to STINKY Wi-Fi, complete setup
  3. Open the Starlink app → Settings → “Bypass Mode”
  4. Toggle Bypass Mode ON. Confirm: this disables Starlink Wi-Fi
  5. Plug the Ethernet Adapter into the Starlink power supply box (Gen 3) or into the dish (older models)
  6. Plug Cat6 cable from the Ethernet Adapter into your router’s WAN port
  7. Configure your router: WAN connection type = DHCP (Starlink provides DHCP). Done.

What you can do in Bypass Mode

  • Full firewall control: custom rules, geo-blocking, IDS/IPS
  • VLAN networking: separate guest, IoT, server networks
  • Port forwarding: expose services (but see below — Starlink uses CG-NAT)
  • VPN server hosting: Tailscale, WireGuard, OpenVPN
  • Static IP routing: route specific traffic via different paths (e.g., gaming through fibre, streaming through Starlink)
  • QoS: prioritize Zoom over Netflix
  • Better Wi-Fi coverage: enterprise-grade mesh systems (UniFi, Eero Pro) outperform Starlink’s basic Wi-Fi 6 router for large homes

Starlink uses Carrier-Grade NAT (CG-NAT) — your dish doesn’t get a public IPv4 address. This means:

  • Port forwarding doesn’t work from the public internet to your router
  • Hosting public web servers from home requires CG-NAT workarounds
  • Remote access to your home network requires a VPN or relay service

Workarounds:

  • Tailscale: free for 100 devices, works through CG-NAT seamlessly. Install on your router, phone, laptop. Access your home network from anywhere.
  • Cloudflare Tunnel: free for personal use, expose specific services via Cloudflare’s network without public IP
  • Static IPv6: Starlink does offer public IPv6 in some regions. If your destination supports IPv6, port forwarding may work that way.
  • Reverse proxy via a VPS: rent a $5/month DigitalOcean or Hetzner VPS, run a reverse tunnel (ngrok, frp) to expose your home services
  • Tech enthusiast home network: UniFi Dream Machine Pro Max + Access Points
  • Whole-home mesh: Eero Pro 6E or TP-Link Deco XE75 (3-pack)
  • Self-hosting / homelab: pfSense or OPNsense on dedicated hardware + UniFi APs
  • RV / mobile: Pepwave MAX BR1 Mini, or GL.iNet GL-MT3000
  • Off-grid cabin: GL.iNet (low power, 12V capable)

How to disable Bypass Mode (revert)

  1. Open the Starlink app → Settings → Bypass Mode → Toggle OFF
  2. Wait 2 minutes for the Starlink router to restart
  3. Reconnect to STINKY Wi-Fi to verify it’s broadcasting

Bypass Mode FAQ

Does Bypass Mode void my warranty?

No. Bypass Mode is an officially supported Starlink feature. You can switch back and forth at will.

Not on Residential or Roam plans. Some Business and Priority tiers offer static IP options (additional fee). For most Canadians, Tailscale + Cloudflare Tunnel handles the use cases without needing static IP.

Will Bypass Mode work in winter?

Yes. Bypass Mode is a software setting unrelated to weather. The dish still heats itself, the connection is still affected the same way by ice or heavy snow.
