Starlink FAQ Canada: 30+ Real Questions Answered

50+ real questions about Starlink in Canada, answered honestly. Compiled from Canadian Starlink users on Reddit, Facebook groups, and customer feedback. No marketing fluff.

Pricing & Plans

Residential plans range from $60 (Lite) to $115 (Unlimited) CAD/month. The most popular plan is Residential 100 at $75/month. Roam plans range from $75 (50GB) to $200 (Unlimited).

What’s the difference between Residential and Roam?

Residential is locked to a specific home address and gets priority on the satellite network. Roam works anywhere in Canada (and select countries) but gets lower priority during peak congestion.

Is there a one-time setup fee?

No setup fee. You pay for the dish ($349 CAD one-time or $15/month rental for Residential). Shipping is free to most Canadian addresses ($50 to remote postal codes).

Can I pause my subscription?

Only on Roam plans, via Standby at $15/month. Residential cannot pause but can cancel anytime with no fee.

Coverage & Availability

Yes for 99% of populated areas. Some southern cities have a Residential waitlist (Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal) but Roam is always available immediately, everywhere.

Iqaluit, southern Baffin Island, and Kivalliq region are covered. High-Arctic communities above 75°N have limited service. Polar tier provides better high-latitude coverage at $350/month.

Speed & Performance

Typical Canadian speeds: 100-250 Mbps download, 10-25 Mbps upload, 25-50 ms latency. Speed tests vary widely based on time of day, weather, and local congestion.

Peak congestion (6-10pm). The local satellite cell has limited capacity that’s shared among all active users. Starlink prioritizes Residential over Roam during congestion.

Yes for most games. 25-50 ms latency is acceptable. Occasional spikes during satellite handoff (every 90 seconds) can cause brief lag. Pro-competitive ranked play prefers fibre.

Yes reliably on Residential. Multiple 4K streams work simultaneously without buffering in most homes.

Weather & Climate

Yes. The dish has a built-in heater that melts snow automatically. Tested at -40°C in Yukon, NWT, Saguenay, Northern Manitoba. Operational temperature range: -30°C to +50°C (the heater extends this range further in winter).

Heavy thunderstorms cause brief signal degradation (10-30% speed reduction). Light rain and snow have negligible impact. Outages from weather alone are rare.

What about high winds?

The dish is rated for sustained 96 km/h winds and gusts to 112 km/h. Permanent mounts (pole, roof) are more wind-resistant than the included kickstand. In Gaspésie and PEI where gusts can hit 120+ km/h, a reinforced mount is recommended.

Hardware

What dish should I buy?

Standard Gen 3 ($349) for 95% of users. Mini ($299) for RVs, boats, off-grid cabins. Performance ($3,200) for businesses with many users. High Performance for in-motion use cases.

What’s the power consumption?

Standard dish: 50-75W average, peaks to 150W during heater operation in winter. Mini: 20-40W average. Monthly hydro cost: about $5-12 in Canada.

Yes. Use the official DC-DC power supply for Standard ($199) or a 12V-to-48V converter. Mini natively accepts USB-C PD. Many Canadian off-gridders run Starlink on a 200W solar setup + 100Ah battery.

How long does the dish last?

Designed for 5-10 years of outdoor use. Real-world reports show no widespread hardware failures in the 4 years since Canadian launch (2022). UV degradation of cable and connectors is the main long-term wear point.

Installation

Yes, most people do. The dish self-orients automatically. Mounting takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on location. See our full installation guide.

Does the dish need an unobstructed view of the sky?

Yes. Trees, buildings, and steep mountain slopes degrade or block service. Use the Starlink app’s AR obstruction tool before installing.

Account & Service

Is there a contract or commitment?

No. Month-to-month. Cancel anytime.

Can I return the dish?

Yes within 30 days for a full refund. After 30 days you can sell the dish on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace.

Online ticketing through the Starlink app. Typical response: 24-72 hours. No phone support. Most issues are user-resolvable via the app’s troubleshooting wizards.

Is identity verification required?

Sometimes. Starlink may require KYC verification (government ID) before activation, especially in Canada since 2025. Submit through the app.

Specific Use Cases

Yes. Buy the Mini dish ($299) on the Roam plan. Works at any campsite in Canada. For in-motion use (driving), get the In-Motion variant ($3,000+).

Roam works on freshwater lakes and harbours. For ocean / open seas use Maritime service ($250-$5,000/month based on data tier) with High Performance hardware.

Almost certainly yes. Cottage country (Muskoka, Laurentides, BC Lakes, Eastern Townships) is fully Starlink-covered. Use Roam ($75-200/month) for seasonal use, or Residential if you visit year-round.
