Starlink Coverage in Canada: Provinces, Territories, Waitlist

Quick answer: Starlink covers 99% of Canada’s populated land, including Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, all 10 provinces, and most remote areas. Southern cities have a soft waitlist (Residential 100 specifically) but Roam plans are always available immediately, everywhere.

  1. Go to starlink.com and enter your full address
  2. Starlink shows your service status: “Available now”, “Waitlist”, or “Coming soon”
  3. If on waitlist for Residential, you can still order a Roam plan immediately (works at any address)
  4. Roam plans are billed monthly and you can switch to Residential later when capacity opens

Why are some southern Canadian cities on a waitlist?

Starlink reserves Residential capacity for rural users who have no other options. When too many city customers sign up, Starlink throttles new Residential sales in those cells. This protects rural service quality.

The current waitlist cities (June 2026): Vancouver Lower Mainland, Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa-Gatineau, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal Island.

Workarounds:

  • Order Roam Unlimited ($200/month) — same speeds, no address lock
  • Wait 2-6 months for capacity to free up
  • If you have a cottage address outside the cell, register that address instead

What about the far North?

Starlink is the only realistic broadband option for most of Yukon, NWT, and southern Nunavut. Speeds in the North are typically 50-150 Mbps, slightly slower than southern Canada due to satellite geometry, but still 10× faster than legacy options.

Coverage above 70°N latitude (high Arctic) is limited because Starlink’s first-generation satellites don’t reach those polar angles efficiently. The Polar service tier ($350/month) and second-gen satellites are progressively closing this gap.

What if my view of the sky is blocked?

Starlink needs a clear view of the sky. The dish constantly tracks satellites moving across a 100° cone overhead. Heavy obstructions hurt performance:

  • Tall coniferous trees (pines, spruces) blocking the south sky → significant signal loss
  • Tall buildings or mountains in southern view → service interruptions
  • Roof overhangs, eaves → minor losses if dish is poorly placed

Use the official Starlink app’s “Check for Obstructions” tool (camera AR mode) before installing. If your spot is blocked, options include: pole mount above trees, ground mount in a clearing, or in extreme cases tree removal.

Coverage FAQ

Yes for most populated Arctic communities including Iqaluit, Inuvik, Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet. Coverage thins above 75°N latitude where Polar service is required.

Yes — Roam plans work in motion. For cars, RVs, and pleasure boats use the Mini or Standard dish on the Roam plan. For boats in coastal/ocean waters use the Maritime service tier with the High Performance dish (~$3,000 hardware + $250-$5,000/month based on use).

Very accurate at the postal-code level. Starlink updates the map weekly based on actual satellite traffic and capacity allocation. If it says “Available” at your address, service typically works within 7 days of ordering.

*1 month of free Starlink service (equal to your plan) automatically credited 30 days after activation when you order through our official referral link RC-DF-7650727-61403-46. Official SpaceX program. No extra cost for you: same price as starlink.com. FastSat.ca also receives a free month, which funds the site.
